Principle Investigator / Senior Lecturer

The University of Auckland

Yuqian Lu joined the University of Auckland in 2019, as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2022. Between 2015 and 2019, he worked at Compact Sorting Equipment and FRAMECAD, leading intelligent system development and commercialization for 4 years.

He dedicates to developing translatable intelligent system technologies for transforming the workplace into a more efficient, enjoyable, and sustainable environment. The key of his research is to develop cognitive sensing, reasoning, control, and human interaction technologies with applications to fabrication, assembly, human-machine collaboration, and quality assurance.

Since 2019, he has produced 7 ESI Highly Cited Papers and 1 ESI Hot Cited Papers. He has received funding from prestigious funding bodies (e.g., National Science Challenge and Callaghan Innovation) and leading high-tech companies (e.g., Spark, Nokia, Oasis Engineering, and Fletcher Steel), with a total portfolio of >NZD $2.5 million.

His strong technical expertise in developing intelligent systems and ability to lead cross-functional R&D teams has assisted his industry partners to translate vague ideas to market-driven commercial products. He led the development of the world-first cloud-based production management system for Cold-Formed Steel construction automation - MyFRAMECAD and an AI-based construction costing tool - FRAMECAD Estimator. He is well-connected with high-tech companies in New Zealand, with a strong portfolio of industry-funded R&D research projects.
